Chickasaw County, Mississippi by 1840.
John was working on a farm in 1850 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi and living with the Jefferson Davis family. His wife Mary Ann was only sixteen when they married. On January 2, 1855 he bought land from John A. Watkins recorded as follows: SE¼ of Sect ¼ S 5 T14 R1E District Land offered for sale at Pontotoc - Warranty Deed - Acknowledged January 2, 1855 - Consideration $1.00 - filed for record. Their old homeplace is located near the New Liberty Community Center. According to copies of his military records, he joined Captain J.M. Gaston's Company, 42nd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, which subsequently became "Infantry" on May 13, 1862 at Benela, Mississippi for three years of the war. His name does appear on the company muster roll, and he was present from time of enlistment until July 1, 1863. He was lost in action near Gettysburg July 1, 1863. On a record dated "Near Petersburg Virginia, March 25, 1865", it stated that he was confined at Fort Delaware. A record of Prisoners of War at Fort McHenry, Maryland states that he was confined July 4, 1863 by General Schenck and sent to Fort Delaware. He signed an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of American on June 11, 1865 and was released from prison. Find here a list of his children:

Last seen in the early 1930's. Anna Belle Powell Tucker says that she was told the William Andrew came to the home of one of the Easleys in Arkansas, one of the children by his father's third wife. He walked up on the porch, and asked "Where's Pa?" When they told him that his father had been dead for several years, he turned around two or three times, walked off the porch, and has not been seen since. She said that he was married several times, that he had a daugther by his first wife, and that she believed he lived around Little Rock, Arkansas. He was talented in art.

He was born April 24, 1932 in Columbus, Ga., the son of Fred M. and Mary (Stallworth) Grant.

Obituary
David Lynn Steed
David was suddenly and tragically taken from us on December 24, 2007. David was born in Ukiah, CA, on February 15, 1963. With his family, David moved to Hoopa in 1966 where, being the “baby brother “, he was "educated "and somewhat tormented by his older brothers Randy and Rick and their shenanigans.
He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked in the construction trade, most recently with Keith North owner of Loleta Realty. Keith loved David as a son and will so miss him. Thank you Keith for loving David so much.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Randy Steed in July of 2004 and his beloved father, Raymond in November of this year.
David is survived by the love of his life, Paula, wife of fourteen years; mother-in-law, Marlene Mooneyham; sons, Andy (grandsons Zaden and Xalier), Jaimie and his wife Shawneen and Evan; daughters, Jennifer and her husband Jim and April. He is also survived by his loving mother, Pat Steed; his best friend and brother, Rick Steed and his wife Patty; nephews, Rich and his love Kim, Cole and his love Christina, Travis and his wife Terri and Monroe Steed; his sister-in-law, Cindy (Randy); his niece, Kendra and her husband Rocky, Dustin and his wife Michelle, and Ian and Morgan Steed. He is also survived by countless friends and those he considered extended family.
David was a very loving and compassionate man. He, like his brothers and father, gave so much of himself to anyone who was in need whether they needed money, his time or maybe just firewood. They only needed to ask and David would give. David was also a very forgiving man. He even forgave a total stranger who had stolen from him and, on the day he passed, made a "gentlemen’s" agreement, shaking his hand and allowing him to reimburse him. David was repaid for his forgiveness with the loss of his life.
David was especially proud of his son Evan who with a GPA of 3.4, went on to attend College of the Redwoods and follow in his and Grandpa’s footsteps and enroll in the construction course. A truly proud moment was on December 13 of this year, when Evan was awarded a scholarship for his studies by the Humboldt Builder’s Exchange at the Ingomar Club in Eureka.
There are no words to describe not only the loss that we are suffering, but also the support from extended family, friends and even strangers.
We would like to thank so many, the Fortuna Police Department, the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department and other agencies for their exhausting efforts. We are so sorry that your holiday was marred with this incident. Thanks also to the many friends that have offered their prayers, hugs, tears and best wishes.
A potluck celebration of David’s life will be held at the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department Firehall, So. Fortuna Blvd. in Fortuna on January 5 at 1:00 p.m.
An account has been set up in memory of David for his family at Umpqua Bank in Fortuna.

Officers sorting through incidents that led to Fortuna man's death
Jessie Faulkner/The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 12/26/2007 01:21:17 AM PST
FORTUNA -- One man is dead, another was flown to a Redding hospital and a third was questioned following a combination shooting-pickup collision near Redwood Way around 8:15 p.m. Monday.
Police Chief Kris Kitna said Tuesday that officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2000 block of South 3rd Street, off of Redwood Way, and witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the scene on foot.
What they found was a pickup truck had been driven through the South 3rd Street home's back fence, one man, David Steed, 43, of Fortuna was dead in the backyard. Another man, Thomas Dowdy, 22, also of Fortuna and the home's resident, arrived at Redwood Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. He was subsequently flown to Redding for medical treatment.
Kitna said his department's preliminary investigation revealed that Steed and Dowdy, who had a history of altercations, had gotten into an argument and when Steed began to leave Dowdy allegedly fired shots in his direction. Meanwhile, Steed's 18-year-old son, Evan, was waiting in his father's pickup parked on Redwood Way and, after hearing the gunshots, drove the truck through the home's 6-foot back fence striking one or both of the men, Kitna said.
No files have been charged, the police chief said, pending the Humboldt County Coroner's conclusion on the cause of Steed's death -- injuries from being struck by the pickup or from gunshot wounds.
Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jaguar said Tuesday that the question should be answered later this week.
”We won't know for sure until we do an autopsy and that won't be until Thursday, Jager said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Fortuna police have interviewed Evan Steed twice, the California Department of Justice Lab has assisted in processing the crime scene and Humboldt County District Attorney's Officers investigators are helping in the ongoing investigation.
Any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Fortuna Police Department at 725-7550.
Kitna said he hoped to recommend charges to the District Attorney's office by the end of the week, but that depends, in part, on information from witnesses.

Preliminary results point to gunshot wounds as cause of death
Chris Durant The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 12/29/2007 01:27:18 AM PST
Fortuna resident David Steed was killed by gunshot wounds according to a Friday autopsy in Santa Rosa.
The Fortuna Police Department said the results are preliminary and that its investigators, along with investigators from the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office, the California Department of Justice and the county Coroner's Office are still compiling information and conducting interviews.
Steed, 43, was allegedly shot by Thomas Dowdy, 22, of Fortuna Monday night as the two argued in Dowdy's yard on the 2000 block of South 3rd Street in Fortuna.
Earlier reports state Steed's son, Evan Steed, 18, drove a pickup truck through the yard's fence after hearing the shots, running into one or both of the men.
Fortuna Police Chief Kris Kitna said investigators are looking into previous altercations between the men.
”There's been some altercations and/or thefts,” Kitna said. “We are getting some information that there were some threats made.”
Kitna said the entire string of incidents may stem from the theft of firewood.
Steed died at the scene.
Dowdy was taken to Redwood Memorial Hospital and eventually transferred to a Redding hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Neither Mercy Medical Center or the Shasta Regional Center in Redding listed Dowdy as a patient Friday afternoon.
All of the investigators in the case will be meeting with a senior deputy district attorney to determine what charges, if any, may be filed.
”We are working very closely with the District Attorney's Office,” Kitna said.
The decision on charges was postponed until the autopsy could reveal if Steed died from the gunshots or from the pickup truck that crashed through the fence.
Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the Fortuna Police Department at 725-7550.
Chris Durant can be reached at 441-0506 or at cdurant@times-standard.com .

Chief says charges will be filed in Fortuna shooting
Chris Durant/The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 01/01/2008 01:24:30 AM PST
According to the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office, there had been no charges filed against Thomas Dowdy as of Monday, but Fortuna Police Chief Kris Kitna has no doubt that charges will be lodged against the shooting suspect.
”The person will be charged, it's juts a matter of what (crime) and when we're going to issue the warrant,” Kitna said Monday.
Dowdy, 22, allegedly shot and killed David Steed, 43, on Christmas Eve in his Fortuna yard.
Dowdy was also injured when Steed's son allegedly drove a pickup truck through a fence after hearing gunshots.
The truck hit both men.
A Friday autopsy revealed that Steed died as a result from gunshot wounds, not injuries received after being hit by the truck.
Kitna said investigators, which include members of the District Attorney's Office, planned on reconstructing the accident Monday.
”We're tying up loose ends right now,” Kitna said.
Kitna also said that Dowdy is out of the hospital but does not appear to be a flight risk because of the injuries he received from the truck hitting him.
There had been altercations between the two men in the past that may have started after some firewood was stolen.
Chris Durant can be reached at 441-0506 or at cdurant@times-standard.com .
